In-Depth Information
Mumbai is Maharashtra's main transport hub, although Pune, Jalgaon and Aurangabad are
also major players.
Getting Around
Because the state is so large, internal flights (eg Pune to Nagpur) can help speed up your
explorations. Airfares vary widely on a daily basis. AC Indica taxis are readily available,
too, and charge around ?10 per kilometre. For long trips, factor in a minimum daily dis-
tance of 250km, and a daily driver's allowance of ?250.
The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC; www.msrtc.gov.in ) has a superb semide-
luxe bus network spanning all major towns, with the more remote places connected by or-
dinary buses. Some private operators have luxury 'Volvo' and 'Mercedes Benz' services
between major cities.

HOTEL TAXES
In Maharashtra, hotel rooms above ?1000 attract a 7.42% Service Tax, plus a 'Luxury Tax' of 4% (for tariffs of
?750 to ?1200) or 10% (tariffs over ?1200). Many hotels will negotiate one or both of the taxes away in quiet
times.
