there's a trade-off here with the long list of borderline-monastic rules, which some find
off-putting.

People either love Bentley's or hate it, depending on which of the five buildings they end
up in. Avoid Henry Rd and JA Allana Marg. The three buildings on Oliver Rd are good,
but your first choice is the main building, where big rooms have old-school floor tiles,
wooden furniture and colonial-era charm aplenty.
Regent Hotel

( 22021518; www.regenthotelcolaba.com ; 8 Best Marg; r with AC incl breakfast ?4579-5284; ) The
friendly, Arabian-flavoured Regent has marble surfaces and soft beiges aplenty. More-ex-
pensive upper floors have tree views. The retro-chic breakfast area fills the 1st floor hall-
way, so avoid rooms 101-110 if you plan to sleep in.

Rooms here, in a gracefully crumbling, colonial-era building in prime Colaba, are simple
and slightly overpriced. But all have fridges and some are huge and/or have whispers of
charm, like ornate stucco ceilings. It's a family-run place, but the service gets complaints.

) With its sweeping arches, staircases and domes, the Taj really does feel like a
palace. Following the 2008 terrorist attacks here, some 285 rooms were lavishly restored
in fuchsia, saffron and willow-green colour schemes (and security is Fort Knox-level).
Rooms in the tower wing lack the period details of the palace wing, but some have spec-
tacular, full-on views of the Gateway. The hotel's Harbour Bar ( Click here ) , Mumbai's
first licensed bar, is legendary.
