Rooms here are quirky and tired, with about 100 different bathroom
scenarios (most rooms have common showers, though they were recently renovated). But
the hotel also has old tile floors, wood-beam ceilings and wooden railings, a balcony with
plants and colonial-era Colaba views, and glittery old pictures of gods about - so it goes
both ways.

'Salvies' is a Mumbai institution popular with rupee-pinching travellers.
The large, ascetic dorms here are clean but cannot be reserved in advance: come just after
the 9am kickout to ensure a spot. Curfew is midnight.
Sea Shore Hotel

The Sea Shore's
shoebox-size rooms are simple but nearly hotel-quality, with incongruously high-design
communal bathrooms. Interior rooms have no window, but front-facing rooms have
(through dingy, tiny screens) million-dollar views of Mumbai Harbour. The same owners
with similar bathrooms but not-as-nice rooms.
