Time
India uses the 12-hour clock and the local standard time is known as Indian Standard Time (IST). IST is 5½ hours ahead
of GMT/UTC. The floating half-hour was added to maximise daylight hours over such a vast country.
Toilets
»
Public toilets are most easily found in major cities and tourist sites; the cleanest (usually with sit-down and squat
choices) are usually at modern restaurants, shopping complexes and cinemas.
»
Beyond urban centres, toilets are of the squat variety and locals may use the 'hand-and-water' technique, which in-
volves carrying out ablutions with a small jug of water and the left hand. It's always a good idea to carry your own toilet
paper and hand sanitiser, just in case.
