Accommodation
Accommodation in South India ranges from grungy backpacker hostels with concrete floors and cold 'bucket' showers to
opulent heritage hotels. We've listed reviews by author preference within price categories; standout options are indicated
by.
Categories
As a general rule, budget ($) covers everything from basic hostels, hotels and guesthouses in urban areas to traditional
homestays in villages. Midrange hotels ($$) tend to be modern concrete-and-glass affairs that usually offer extras such as
cable/satellite TV and air-conditioning (although some just have noisy 'air-coolers' that cool air by blowing it over cold
water). Top-end places ($$$) stretch from luxury five-star chains to gorgeous heritage palaces and resorts.
Costs
Costs vary widely across South India; prices are highest in large cities (especially Mumbai), lowest in rural areas. Costs
are also highly seasonal - hotel prices can drop by 20% to 50% outside of peak season. Most establishments raise tariffs
annually, so the prices may have risen by the time you read this.
Reservations
ยป The majority of top-end and some midrange hotels require a deposit at the time of booking. The figure can range from a
day's tariff to the full amount. This can usually be done with a credit card.
