Architectural Splendour
From looming temple gateways adorned with a rainbow of delicately carved deities to
whitewashed cube-like village houses, South India has a rich architectural heritage.
Traditional buildings, such as temples, often have a superb sense of placement within
the local environment, whether perched on a boulder-strewn hill or standing by a
large artificial reservoir. British bungalows with corrugated iron roofs and wide ver-
andahs are a feature of many hill stations, but more memorable are the attempts to
meld European and Indian architecture, such as the breathtaking Maharaja's Palace
in Mysore.
Masterpieces of Traditional Indian Architecture by Satish Grover and The History of Architecture in India by Christopher
Tadgell proffer interesting insights into temple architecture.
