many large shops in Běijīng, once you have chosen your item you are issued with a re-
ceipt that you take to the till counter (shōuyíntái) where you pay, then you return to the
counter where you chose your medicine to collect your purchase. Note that many chemists
are effectively open 24 hours and have a small window or slit through which you can pay

Money
Rénmínbì (RMB), or 'people's money', is issued by the Bank of China. The basic unit of
Chinese currency is the yuán, designated in this topic by a '¥', but usually written in shops
and on signs with its Chinese character . Yuán is also referred to colloquially as kuài or
kuàiqián . There are also smaller denominations of jiǎo and fěn . Ten jiǎo - in spoken
Chinese, it's known as máo - make up one yuán . Ten fēn make up one jiǎo , but these
days fēn are rare because they are worth next to nothing .
ATMs
Most ATMs ( qǔkuǎnjī ) in Běijīng now accept foreign credit cards and bank cards con-
nected to Plus, Cirrus, Visa, MasterCard and Amex; there could be a small withdrawal
charge levied by your bank (or the local bank).
