TIBET
For Lhasa (Lāsà) in Tibet ( Xīzàng), the T27 (hard-seat/hard-sleeper/soft-sleeper ¥389/
766/1189, 44 hours) leaves Běijīng West at 8.09pm, taking just under two days. In the re-
turn direction, the T28 departs Lhasa at 1.45pm and arrives at Běijīng West at 8.07am.
SUBWAY
At the time of research, Běijīng West was on the disconnected subway Line 9, so it was
better to use Military Museum subway station on Line 1; turn left out of Exit D of the sub-
way station, then left again and keep walking (15 minutes). By the time you read this,
though, Line 9 should be connected to the rest of the subway network.
BUS
Public buses leave from the right of the station as you exit. Useful Bus 52 heads east past
Xīdàn, Běijīng Train Station and Jiànguómén.
TAXI
Use the official taxi rank (underneath North Plaza) or walk a block away from the station
and hail a cab on the street. Ignore drivers who approach you. Insist drivers use the meter
( dǎbiǎo).
Běijīng South Train Station
The ultra-modern Běijīng South Station (Nán Zhàn), which is linked to the subway sys-
tem on Line 4, accommodates very high speed 'bullet' trains to destinations such as Tiān-
jīn, Shànghǎi, Hángzhōu and Qīngdǎo.
Fúzhōu D-series, second-class seat ¥676, 15 hours (7.50am)
