The most
engaging of the Red Lantern brood, West Yard is set around two lovely, quiet courtyards.
The rooms are thoughtfully and comfortably furnished in an old Běijīng style - wooden
beds and fittings - and the staff are efficient and unobtrusive. There's also a honeymoon
suite for those in the mood for love. It's essential to book ahead. To find it, walk north on
Xisi Beidajie from Xisi metro; it's two

A magnificent, modernist behemoth marooned amid the soulless
towers of Běijīng's financial district, the Ritz-Carlton remains one of the city's finest ho-

every whim of the traveller (we like the way you can charge your laptop inside the safe
deposit box). The acclaimed spa and health club occupies an entire floor, while there are
Chinese and Western restaurants on site. Service is predictably excellent. Discounts of
40% are available.

The intimate, leafy courtyard at Bamboo Garden is appealing,
even if the rooms, as in many of Běijīng's courtyard hotels, can't quite match the elegant,
hushed atmosphere. The small singles are ordinary, so upgrading to the much more pleas-
ant doubles and suites is recommended. The buildings date to the late Qing dynasty; its
