Getting Around
» Bicycle The most fun, and often the quickest, way to get around. Almost every road has
a bike lane. Bike rental per day is ¥30 to ¥50.
» Walking The best way to see Běijīng's hútòng .
» Subway Quick, modern and easy to use, but often overcrowded. Per trip ¥2.
» Buses Dirt cheap and extensive, but difficult for non-Chinese speakers to negotiate, and
often overcrowded. Per trip ¥1, with travel card ¥0.4.
» Taxis Cheap by Western standards but at certain times hard to find, and traffic jams can
really slow things down. Flag fall is ¥10.

Sleeping
Accommodation is of a decent standard in Běijīng, but can be expensive. Hostels provide
best value for money, with traveller-friendly facilities and staff with good English-lan-
guage skills. Budget travellers can also tap into Běijīng's ever-growing couch-surfing
community. The city's courtyard hotels are wonderfully atmospheric, and plant you right
in the thick of the hútòng action, but they lack the facilities of top-end hotels in the same
price bracket.
You can book rooms over the phone, or directly through hotel websites. Or else use one of
