In-Depth Information
Standard Hotels
Midrange Chinese hotels lack character but often come with generous discounts. Expect
clean (although possibly smoky) rooms with TV, kettle, internet access via cable and
small attached bathrooms. Staff rarely speak much English. If you just want an unfussy,
clean and comfortable room, a crowd of lower-midrange business hotel chains offer

Some ultracheap guesthouses, known as
zhāodàisuǒ
, won't take foreigners.

Discounts
In hotel reviews, for consistency, we have published the rack rate, but apart from
at hostels (where discounts are unusual), you rarely pay full price, except during
major public holidays. Discounts of up to 50% are common, although 30% to 40%
is the norm. Booking online will help you secure the best discounts, but you al-
most always get the same or similar discounts if you turn up at reception enquiring
about a room.
Reservations
Hotel rooms are easy to find, although it's worth booking during public holidays.
It's always advisable to pre-book courtyard hotels, as they often have only four or
five rooms in total.
Checking In
When checking into a hotel, you will need to complete a registration form, a copy
of which will be sent to the local Public Security Bureau (PSB; Gōng'ānjú), and
your passport will need to be scanned or photocopied.
