SHOPPING
The Cháoyáng district has some of the swankiest malls in town, as well as many of the most popular markets for
visitors, including the Silk Market and Yashow, two multi-floor indoor clothes and souvenir markets which are
heaving at weekends. Key areas for purchases are Sānlǐtún and Guómào, but there are shops of all descriptions
spread across the district. Pānjiāyuán Market is on the edge of Cháoyáng and is the city's premier souvenir mar-
ket.
SĀNLǏTÚN VILLAGE
|SHOPPING MALL
(19 Sanlitun Lu, 10am-10pm; Tuanjiehu)
This ultra-modern, eye-catching collection of mid-
sized malls is a shopping, and architectural highlight of this part of the city. The Village
looms over what was once a seedy strip of dive bars (there are still a few of those left,
mind) and has transformed the area into a hangout hotspot for locals and foreigners alike.
The complex is in two sections, which book-end the slightly older 3.3 Shopping Centre.
The
South Village
was completed a few years back and is home to Běijīng's first Apple
store, the world's largest Adidas shop and a number of midrange Western clothing stores,
as well as cafes, restaurants and the multi-screen cinema complex MegaBox. Nearby
North
Village
is home to more high-end labels and local designer boutiques, including Emporio
Armani, Comme des Garçons, Balenciaga and Shanghai Trio, and is set beside Běijīng's

The six-storey Silk Market con-
tinues to thrive despite some vendors being hit by lawsuits from top-name brands tired of
being counterfeited on such a huge scale. Not that the legal action has stopped the coach
loads of tourists who descend on this place every day. Their presence makes effective bar-
gaining difficult. But this is a good place for cashmere, T-shirts, jeans, shirts, skirts and, of
course, silk, which is one of the few genuine items you will find here.
