In-Depth Information
( Xiǎo Wángfǔ; 6594 3602; 2 Guanghua Dongli, mains ¥30-50; 11am-10.30pm; Jintaixizhao)
This
modest, but clean, well-run restaurant has been serving customers here for almost 20
years. It's grown over time and now occupies part of three floors of an old-fashioned, low-
rise housing block, and even has some neat balcony seating. The menu includes a mix of
Chinese cuisine, and this is a decent place to try good-value Peking roast duck (¥128). It
has an English sign, but is tucked away down an alley, so is sometimes hard to find. Best
accessed from Guanghua Lu.
FÈITÁNG YÚXIĀNG$$
|CHINESE SÌCHUĀN
( 6417 4988; Chunxiu Lu, mains ¥30-60; 11am-2pm & 5.30pm-10pm; ; Dongzhimen or Dongsi Shi-
tiao)
Best known for its
shuǐzhǔ yú
(per
jīn
¥50-100), a chilli-laden fish broth, translated on
the menu as 'poached fish in hot chilli oil', this striking branch of the well-regarded res-
taurant chain does the whole range of spicy Sichuanese favourites. The fish is ordered,
and priced by the
jīn
(500g). The average serving is around three
jīn
and can be shared
between three or four people.
BǍOYUÁN DUMPLING RESTAURANT$
|CHINESE DUMPLINGS
( Bǎoyuán Jiǎozi Wū; 6 Maizidian Jie, mains ¥20-40, dumplings ¥10-16; 11.15am-10pm; ; Liangmaqiao
or Agricultural Exhibition Centre)
Fun for the kids - but also tasty enough for parents - this better-
than-average dumplings restaurant dazzles diners with its multi-coloured
jiǎozi
. The
dough dyes are all natural (carrots make the orange; spinach the green) and don't detract
from the flavour of the fillings, which is as good as at any of Běijīng's best dumpling
joints. Dumplings are ordered and priced by the
liǎng
(about 50g). One
liǎng
gets you six
dumplings. Not much English spoken, but there's an English sign and menu.

Housed in a reconstructed industrial-style courtyard complex
known as 1949, this chic restaurant incorporates both Chinese and French duck-roasting
methods to produce some stand-out duck dishes, including a leaner version of the classic
Peking roast duck (¥238). The pumpkin infused with sour plums is a delicious accompani-
ment, while the wine list is as impressive as you'd expect. Book ahead.
