In-Depth Information
men Dajie
, a street completely revamped in the style of old Peking. If you want, hop on a tram in a straight line
all the way down to Zhushikou Xidajie.
Look at some of the
restored old shop buildings
along Qianmen Dajie, then turn right onto the historic
shopping street of
Dashilar
(aka Dazhalan Jie). Down the first alley on the left is Liubiju, a traditional
Běijīng
lǎozìhào
(old, established shop) famous for its pickled condiments.
Push on through the crowds on Dazhalan Jie. On your right at No 5 is
Ruìfúxiáng
, a famous old Běijīng
silk store dating to 1893. Pop in and view the grey brickwork and carved decorative flourishes of the entrance
hall.
Cross Meishi Jie and enter
Dazhalan Xijie
, once known as Guanyin Temple Street. If you're peckish, stop
at any of the vendors of noodles, pancakes, corn cakes or stinky tofu, then turn right at the fork with Yingtao
Xiejie to see the
plaque
marking the site of the former Guanyin Temple (Nos 6 to 8 Yingtao Xiejie) that
stood here.
Continue along Yingtao Xiejie past the narrow and pinched Taitou Xiang ( Raise Head Alley) for around 100m
and examine the house at
27 Yingtao Xiejie
(also called Yingtao Hutong). The wall of the building is
daubed with a largely indecipherable Cultural Revolution slogan, although the red characters 'Long Live the
Revolution') can be seen.
Loop round to the right and at the end of Yingtao Xiejie, turn sharp left and the road will bend round to
Li-
ulichang Dongjie
, Běijīng's premier antique street.
