Local Life
» Fly a Kite Běihǎi Park and the neighbouring Hòuhǎi lakes are prime kite-flying territ-
ory. Visit the Three Stone Kite Shop ( CLICK HERE ) to kit yourself out.
» Hútòng The alleyways and lanes here are far less commercial than any others in the city
and a great introduction to Běijīng's tremendous street life.
» Winter Sports When winter clamps the Hòuhǎi lakes in its icy embrace, do as
Beijingers do and strap on a pair of ice skates (you can hire them by the lakes).
Getting There & Away
» Subway Line 1 cuts across the south of the district, Line 2 circles it, while Line 4 runs
north-south and the new Line 6 travels west-east across it.
» Bus Bus 1 runs along Xichang'an Jie, Fuxingmennei Dajie and Fuxingmenwai Dajie,
taking you to Capital Museum. Bus 22 takes you from Tiān'ānmén West to Xīdān and
then north to Xīnjiēkou.
Lonely Planet's Top Tip
Come nightfall, the Hòuhǎi lakes become a madhouse of milling crowds and bar touts trying to entice you into
their overpriced hostelries. Avoid both by slipping down the hútòng that run off the lakeshore, where you'll find
far more amenable bars and cafes. The lanes running west from Silver Ingot Bridge and the west shore of Qián-
hǎi Lake are a good place to start.
