DRUM TOWER DEVELOPMENT
Just as this topic was going to press, controversial plans to redevelop the hútòng -rich area around the historic
Drum and Bell Towers looked like they were back on the table. The original plans to demolish homes surround-
ing the two 18th-century towers, and build a complex that would be known as “Běijīng Time Cultural City”,
had been scrapped in 2010 after lobbying from local protestors. But after no word on the subject for almost two
years, posters suddenly appeared on buildings in the area in December 2012, notifying residents that the demoli-
tion stage of the project would begin in the new year. The Drum and Bell Towers themselves won't be affected
(we hope), but the face of what has for a long time been one of the most charming corners of old Běijīng will
likely be changed forever.
