JIĀNG HÚ

One of the
coolest places to hear Chinese indie and rock bands, Jiāng Hú, run by a trombone-playing,
music-loving manager, is housed in an old courtyard and packs in the punters on a good
night. Intimate, cool, and a decent spot for a drink in a courtyard, even when no bands are
playing. Beers from ¥20.

JIĀNG JÌN JIǓ
( Jiāngjìnjiǔ Jiǔbā; 2 Zhongku Hutong, ( admission from ¥20; 1pm-2am; Guloudajie or Shichahai)
This tiny,
laid-back venue is the best place to hear Chinese folk music from the country's ethnic
minorities, particularly Uighur and Mongolian. Live music is Thursday to Sunday only and
is usually free, although there's sometimes a small cover charge on Fridays and Saturdays
if a more popular act is playing. Beers from ¥15. Cocktails from ¥25.
YÚGŌNG YÍSHĀN

Reputedly one of the most haunted places in Běijīng, this historic
building has been home to Qing-dynasty royalty, warlords and the occupying Japanese
army in the 1930s. You could probably hear the ghosts screaming if it wasn't for the array
of local and foreign bands, solo artists and DJs who take to the stage here every week. With
a very sound booking policy and a decent space to play with, this is one of the best places
in town to listen to live music.

Large single-room space above a 24-hour internet cafe, with a long bar in one corner, a low
stage in another and tables, chairs and sofas strewn across the rest of the floor. Three
music-loving managers ensure decent billing from local bands, and gigs are often free. No
sign; walk under the decorative archway by 206 Guloudong Dajie, continue to Building B,
right at the back of the small car park, then walk up the stairs to your right.
