( www.zajia.cc ; Hóng Ēn Temple, Doufuchi Hutong, 1pm-2am; Guloudajie) Built into the entrance
gate of Hóng Ēn Guàn , a 600-year-old former Taoist temple - most of which is now a
household goods market - beautiful Zá Jiā is a cafe by day (coffee from ¥18), bar by night
(beer from ¥20). The interior is as cool as it is unique, with split-level seating reaching up
into the eaves, and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. It sometimes holds free film
screenings and art exhibitions, but if there's live music at the weekends, there's a cover
charge (¥30 to ¥50).
BALL HOUSE

( Bōlóu Jiǔbā; Lǎo Mó; 40 Zhonglouwan Hutong, 2pm-late; Guloudajie) A bar for those in the know,
Ball House is impossible to stumble across; there's no sign and it's set back from the main
hútòng (which circumnavigates the Bell Tower) at the end of a narrow pathway which
looks like it leads to ordinary housing. There's washing hanging outside and bikes leant
up against the wall, but if you push the door open at the end of the pathway, you enter an
enormous, beautifully restored split-level room and one of the capital's most unusual
drinking spaces. There are pool tables (¥30 per hour) and table football tables (free) dotted
around the place - hence the name - but there are enough nooks and crannies to find your
own quiet spot if you don't fancy the ball games. Beers from ¥15.

( Wényǔ Nǎilào Diàn; 49 Nanluoguxiang, custard drinks ¥9-12; noon until sold out) There's an obsession
with yoghurt and milk custard in Běijīng, and Wen Yu's Custard Shop, on historic Nan-
luogu Xiang, seems to be the place everyone wants to get it from. Wen Yu is the third gen-
eration in his family carrying on the tradition of making this creamy drink, and punters
queue down the lane to get their hands on a cup of it before he sells out (normally by mid-
afternoon).
|CAFE
There are various flavours; the classic is the yuánwèi nǎilào (original-flavour custard;
¥10). No English sign. Just follow the queue.

( Máo Máo Chóng; 12 Banchang Hutong, beers from ¥25, cocktails from ¥40; 7pm-midnight, closed Mon & Tue;
; Nanluoguxiang) This small but lively expat favourite has a rustic interior, good-value
cocktails and a no-smoking policy. Its pizzas also get rave reviews.
