TRADITIONAL BĚIJĪNG YOGHURT
On your shopping wanders through the hútòng, you may notice intriguing rows of little clay pots, sealed with
thin, white and blue paper tops, and lined up outside small corner shops. The pots contain lǎo Běijīng suānnǎi ,
traditional Běijing yoghurt, and make a perfect slurp-on-the-go street-side refreshment.
Prices vary slightly, but they tend to cost ¥3 if you drink them on the spot and return your pot, or ¥4 if you
take them away.

on a your own personal table-top barbecue spit before hacking away at the meatiest bits
with a rudimentary, long-handled knife and fork. Tables spill out onto the lively hútòng ,
creating a party atmosphere of multi-barbecue revelry. Order your leg of lamb ( yáng tuǐ )
by the jīn . Three jīn ( sān jīn ) is enough for two or three people. You'll then be given a
selection of free cold dishes as accompaniments, plus a cumin-based dry dip to roll your
lamb slices in. Other popular side dishes include barbecued naan bread ( kǎo náng ), soy
fried rice ( jiàng yóu chǎo fàn ) and noodle-drop soup ( gēda tāng ).

Qing-dynasty general. Source is an amenable place to sample the delights of some of Ch-
ina's hottest dishes, as the chefs here tend to go easy on the chillies; they'll also adjust the
temperature of the food on request. You choose from a selection of set menus (¥288/388/
488), which changes every month, and there's an extensive wine list.
