vendors come and go (especially those working off cycle rickshaws), but if you're stuck trying to
find one, try one of these two locations:
About 100m west of the subway station, on the south side of Dongsishitiao Lu, you'll find a woman who's been
serving hungry commuters from the back of her cycle rickshaw here for years.
south of the Lama Temple, and operating from a hole in the wall by a restaurant called Yānlín Cāntīng , this
pancake stall is one of the few that offers a variety of pancake mixes. Choose from millet (
xiǎo mǐ
), mung bean
(
lǜ dòu
), glutinous rice (
nuò mǐ
) or purple-coloured glutinous rice (
zǐ mǐ
).

This small, no-nonsense, but
clean, restaurant serves arguably the best
lǘròu huǒshāo
(donkey-meat pastry pockets; ¥5)
in Běijīng. Bowls of
xiǎomǐ zhōu
(millet porridge; ¥2) make an ideal accompaniment, or
else just grab a beer (
píjiû
; ¥4). No English sign or menu, and no English spoken.

eccentric manager of What? Bar, two doors from here, swears by the boiled dumplings (
zhēng jiǎo
) in this simple restaurant. They come by the basket and are perfect for lining
your stomach before you delve into the cheap beer at What? Bar. You can also get fluffier,
steamed dumplings (
xiǎolóng bāo
) for the same price (¥5 per basket), as well as soups
(seaweed,
zǐcài tāng;
wonton,
hún dùn;
egg,
jīdàn tāng
) and noodles (beef,
niúròu miàn;
spicy glass noodles,
suān là fěn
). No English sign or menu.
