Contemporary Art
With Chinese contemporary art still in demand from collectors around the world, artwork
can be a great investment. If you're here in June, the annual Affordable Art Fair held in
the 798 Art District is a fine place to find reasonably priced work. Otherwise, visit reput-
able galleries like Red Gate Gallery. Realistically, you'll need to spend at least US$1000
for something from an up-and-coming artist that will subsequently increase in value.

» The Forbidden City & Dōngchéng Central Wangfujing Dajie is Běijīng's
premier shopping street, home to malls and more.
» Drum Tower & Dōngchéng North Trendy and offbeat boutiques abound in
Nanluogu Xiang and Gulou Dongdajie, and the capital's finest kite shop is also
here.
» Temple of Heaven Park & Dōngchéng South Hóngqiáo Market and its oceans
of pearls is the main draw, but there's also the renovated Qiánmén Dajie shopping
strip.
» Dashilar & Xīchéng South Some of the city's oldest emporiums, and the an-
tiques, arts and crafts hub of Líulìchǎng.
» Sānlǐtún & Cháoyáng Mall central, as well as home to most of Běijīng's finest
markets.

Business Hours
Most shops in Běijīng open earlier than in the West and close later; they usually open between 8am and
8.30am and shut between 9pm and 10pm. Open-air markets generally run from dawn to around sunset, but
might open later and close earlier.
Bargaining
Always remember that foreigners are likely to be quoted an inflated price in Běijīng. Prices in malls are fixed,
