culture is homemade, and there is no way to know how powerful it was to begin with (compared to
EM, which is a known), so a little extra helps your chances of success.
How to culture a homemade Lactobacillus (LAB) solution
1. Mix one part rice thoroughly with two parts water. Stir the mixture vigorously.
• Any type of rice will work.
• I suggest using a dechlorinated tap water, filtered water, or rainwater. You can use tap water
if you let it sit out for 24 hours, allowing the chlorine to dissipate, but in a pinch, regular tap
water should do just fine.
2. Pour the rice wash water through using a strainer or cheesecloth to separate off the solids.
Keep the liquid rice wash water, which should be cloudy in color, and discard and compost the
leftover rice and solids.
