In-Depth Information
Another bottle of a very similar product made by a different manufacturer states that it contains
these 14 species (and again, probably many more not listed):
Bacillus subtilis
Bifidobacterium animalis
Bifidobacterium bifidum
Bifidobacterium longum
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Lactobacillus casei
Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus
Lactobacillus fermentum
Lactobacillus plantarum
Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis
Rhodopseudomonas palustris
Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides
Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Streptococcus thermophilus
So here are two commercially made, high-quality EM1-type mother cultures, and each has a
stated different number of active microbial species — different manufacturers, different formula-
tions. Without doing any in-depth laboratory analysis, both products perform equally well in terms
of making a high-quality bokashi bran; I cannot notice any difference between the two. It is my
belief that, as long as you are buying an EM-type product from a quality manufacture, the exact
species makeup of the EM formulation isn't important, because the main species will always be
present and will drive the consortium. The other support species will add to the depth of the con-
sortium with the functions that each performs. Dr. Higa has always stressed that it isn't the exact
combination or ratio of microorganisms that makes EM so powerful, it is the fact that the microbes
are working together as a group, supporting each other and feeding off of each other, so no one
microbe becomes too important, making the group itself much stronger and more adaptable. This
synergy and diversity give the consortium the ability to persevere and adapt to a wider array of en-
vironmental conditions, as well as giving microbes that would be unable to survive individually the
ability to be used successfully in consortium. This attests to the power of having these microbes
operating and acting in a consortium rather than as individuals.

that over time you will realize that if you buy a high-quality product, then you will get high-quality
results, regardless of minor formulation variances. So, like anything else, it is important to always
