Ar-
chaeological finds from nearby digs conducted at Bidya, Bithnah and Qidfa - including
vessels, arrowheads and carnelian beads - reveal that the area has been settled for at least
3500 years. Other halls are crammed with ethno items like weapons, costumes and Be-
douin jewellery. Although the significance of many objects is undisputable to the lay visit-
or, a few more captions and explanations would make a visit here more meaningful.
Fujairah Fort
HISTORIC SITE
(near cnr Al-Nakheel & Al-Salam Rds )
Draped over a rocky outcrop, overlooking Fujairah's
old village and date-palm oasis, this beautifully restored fort looks splendid, especially
when floodlit at night. Built from mud, gravel, wood and gypsum in the 16th century, it's
a clever composition of circular and square towers that aided in its defence. Although offi-
cially closed, there are caretakers on site who might unlock the heavy wooden doors for a
closer look at the - as yet empty - interior.
Parts of the historic village surrounding the fort have also been reconstructed and
you're free to walk around the expansive grounds and go inside the buildings.
