In-Depth Information
If you're driving, note that despite being surrounded by oil fields, there's a dearth of
petrol stations, so take every opportunity to refuel - Hwy E11 is not a good place to run
out of gas.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Sir Bani Yas Island
A great way to shake off the stresses nibbling at your psyche is by taking a trip to Sir Bani
Yas Island and contemplating life surrounded by a luxurious resort, thousands of free-
roaming animals and the calm azure waters of the Gulf.
This 87 sq km desert island was originally Sheikh Zayed's private retreat. It was his
love of animals that inspired him to turn it into a nature reserve and to bring many native
species back from the brink of extinction. Today, 60% of the island is the protected home
of 25 indigenous and introduced animal species, including sand gazelles, Barbary sheep,
ostriches and even giraffes and cheetahs. Rarities include the Indian blackbuck, an ante-
lope that can reach speeds of up to 90km/h, and several species of oryx, including the Ar-
abian oryx, one of the world's most endangered animals.
Abu Dhabi's royal family still maintains two palaces in the island's south but if they
forgot your invitation, you can still visit through the only resort, the fancy Desert Island
Resort & Spa. The resort can also arrange day trips, although only a limited number of
spots are available and then usually only on weekdays. Check details with the property
directly. Note that you cannot visit the island without a reservation for the resort or at least
a tour.
Activities
Nature & Wildlife Drive DRIVING TOUR
(adult/child Dh150/75; 6.30am-4pm) Island activities range from mountain biking to snor-
kelling, kayaking to guided walks, but if you only do one thing while on the island, make
it a Nature & Wildlife Drive. The drive is a two-hour animal-spotting safari aboard a Jeep
(or minibus on busy days) around the island's savannah-like interior. Guides are very
knowledgeable about the local fauna and flora and will often go out of their way to find
critters for you to look at. Try to get an early morning or late afternoon tour when the an-
imals are at their most active.
