EMIRATES NATIONAL AUTO MUSEUM
A hangar-size ode to the automobile, the Emirates National Auto Museum ( www.enam.ae ; Hwy E65;
9am-1pm & 2-6pm, may vary) is one of those rather kooky roadside attractions that one does not really
expect to find in these parts. Some 45km south of Abu Dhabi, on the lonely Hwy E65 towards the Liwa Oasis, the
pyramid-shaped structure holds about 250 vehicles - from concept cars to American classics - the oldest being a
steam-powered Mercedes from 1885. It's the private collection of Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, aka the
'Rainbow Sheikh' (in 1983 the sheikh bought seven Mercedes 500 SEL, one for each day of the week, painted in
the colours of the rainbow).
Alas, opening hours are erratic at best, but even if no attendant is present, you can still marvel at some strange
vehicles on display in front of the building: a monster truck, an eight-bedroom motor home (complete with bal-
cony), and the 'earth on wheels' in the form of the Globe Trailer.
