Getting There & Away
AIR
Sharjah International Airport ( 06-558 1111; www.shj-airport.gov.ae ) is 15km east of the central city
and has significantly increased its capacity since becoming the hub of Air Arabia ( Click
here ) , the region's first budget airline.
CAR
From Dubai, take Sheikh Rashid Rd across Garhoud Bridge and continue into Sharjah on
Al Ittihad Rd. The drive should take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on traffic and
where in Dubai you started from.
TAXI
The main taxi stand is next to the bus station, but taxis can actually be flagged down any-
where in town. Trips to Dubai come with a Dh20 surcharge. Expect to pay about Dh50 to
Dubai International Airport, Dh90 to Dubai Mall, Dh200 to Fujairah or Al Ain and Dh300
to Abu Dhabi .
If possible avoid travelling between Dubai and Sharjah during peak rush hour (week-
days 7am to 10am, 1pm to 2pm and 5pm to 9pm) as roads can get frustratingly clogged.
Getting Around
TO/FROM THE AIRPORT
Bus 14 (Dh4) and express buses 88 and 99 (Dh5) all travel to the Sharjah city centre. A
taxi ride costs about Dh45, including a Dh20 airport surcharge. Bus 111 goes to Al
Rashidiya station of the Dubai Metro.
BUS
Buses are operated by Mowasalat ( 600 522 282; www.mowasalat.ae ) and travel on nine routes
between 5.30am and 11.30pm at intervals ranging from 10 to 30 minutes. Regular tickets
cost Dh4, express routes are Dh5. Bus 14 is the handiest.
Sharjah's central Al Jubail bus station is next to the fish and vegetable souq and within
walking distance of the Central Souq.
Sharjah Transport Authority ( Click here ) runs bus services to other emirates from the
bays on the western end of the station. Dubai-based RTA ( Click here ) buses leave from
