In-Depth Information
While this is the perfect place to curl up with a book or meditate in the dunes, the
stimuli-deprived will find plenty to do. A wonderful infinity pool beckons, as does the
luscious Satori Spa and an archery range. Children under 12 years of age can let off steam
in Sinbad's Club. Offsite activities include desert tours and horse and camel rides. Bab al-
Shams is about 40 minutes south of Dubai.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Hatta
Cradled by the craggy Hajar Mountains, Hatta, an enclave of Dubai emirate, is a popular
weekend getaway. Its main attraction is its cool, humidity-free climate and magnificent
mountain scenery. While it makes a good base for off-road trips, Hatta itself is a wonder-
ful place to relax.
Sights
Hatta Heritage Village MUSEUM
( 852 1374; 8am-8.30pm Sat-Thu, 2.30-8.30pm Fri) This sprawling village recreates the
Hatta of yore. It is housed in the ruler's restored historic fort with majlis (meeting room) ,
a traditional courtyard house and various barasti (palm-leaf) buildings. Displays on
weaponry, local music, palm-tree products, handicrafts, weaving, traditional dress and old
village society illustrate the past. There are nice views from a restored defensive tower
from 1880 whose doors are about 2.5m above the ground - guards had to use ropes to
climb up there.
To get there, turn south at the main roundabout and drive for about 3km, then turn left
at the sign. It's about a 1.5km walk from the Hatta bus terminal.
Hatta Rock Pools OUTDOORS
Hatta's other main attraction is this series of pools and waterfalls carved out of the rocky
bed of a wadi (river bed). Access was closed during our visit as the government was con-
structing a road and upgrading facilities. Check locally if the area has reopened.
