In-Depth Information
Abra s are motorised traditional wooden boats linking Bur Dubai and Deira across the
creek on two routes:
Route 1 Bur Dubai Abra Station to Deira Old Souq Abra Station ; daily between 5am and midnight.
Route 2 Dubai Old Souq Abra Station to Sabkha Abra Station around the clock.
Abra s leave when full (around 20 passengers), which rarely takes more than a few
minutes. The fare is Dh1 and you pay the driver halfway across the creek. Chartering your
own abra costs Dh120 per hour.
Bus
RTA ( Click here ) operates a clean, comfortable and air-conditioned bus network. The
front of each bus is reserved for women and families. For information and trip planning
call RTA or check the website.
From Saturday to Thursday, most routes operate at 15- to 20-minute intervals between
6am and 11.30pm. Friday service is less frequent and may start later and finish earlier.
Night buses operate at 30-minute intervals in the interim.
Dubai Metro
Dubai Metro was inaugurated in 2010 and operates on two lines:
Red Line Links Rashidiya near Dubai International Airport to Jebel Ali past Dubai Mar-
ina, mostly paralleling Sheikh Zayed Rd
Green Line Links Al Qusais with Dubai Healthcare City
Lines intersect at Union Square in Deira and at BurJuman Station in Bur Dubai. Trains are
met by cabs and feeder buses to take you to your final destination.
Trains run roughly every 10 minutes from 6am to 11pm Saturday to Thursday and 2pm to
midnight on Friday.
Each train consists of five cars. The front car is divided into a women-only section and a
'gold class' section where a double fare buys carpeted floor and leather seats.
Mobile-phone service is available throughout as is wi-fi access for Dh10 per hour when
paying with a credit card (less if you buy a prepaid scratch card).
Palm Monorail
The Palm Monorail ( www.palm-monorail.com ; one-way/return Dh15/25; 10am-10pm) is a driverless tram
that runs along the trunk of the Palm Jumeirah between the Gateway station and the At-
lantis Hotel in 10 minutes. It will eventually be linked to the Dubai Metro. It's a fun ride
but taxis are no more expensive, even if you're travelling alone.
