Sights
Dubai may be vast and amorphous but the areas of interest to visitors are actually fairly
well defined. Not far from Dubai international airport, dusty, crowded and chaotic Deira
and Bur Dubai are the city's oldest neighbourhoods, teeming with mosques and souqs and
best explored on foot.
Dubai's main artery, skyscraper-flanked Sheikh Zayed Rd, starts southwest of here and
runs towards Abu Dhabi, linking the various iconic neighbourhoods, including shiny
Downtown Dubai with the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, Al Quoz arts area and the Mall
of the Emirates with its indoor ski slope. The Dubai Metro handily parallels Sheikh Zayed
Rd.
Along the coast, villa-studded Jumeirah has the nicest beaches and segues smoothly in-
to Umm Suqueim, home to the landmark Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah. Just bey-
ond are the ritzy resorts and residential towers of Dubai Marina with the artificially cre-
ated Palm Jumeirah lying just offshore.
