Salalah Beach Villas$ HOTEL
( 23 235999; www.beach-villas-salalah.com ; Beach Rd, off Ad-Dahariz St; s/d sea view with balcony OR30/38;
) On the beach one block east of the Crowne Plaza, this welcoming family-style
hotel has lovely views: the sea is so close you can taste it through the window. Walk off
breakfast along the magnificent white-sand beach and hazard a splash in the surf on
calmer days. Don't leave without trying the house speciality: Mr and Mrs Kumar's fish
curry (OR6) is a legend among travellers.
The veteran landlord can organise overnight desert tours to Ayoun Pools and the Empty
Quarter from OR130, and full-day tours east or west of the Dhofar plain from OR80. Car
hire (2WD/4WD from OR14/37, including 200km free mileage) is available with dis-
counts for week-long rentals. This guesthouse also runs the 65-room hotel block next door
(singles/doubles OR40/56 for sea view with balcony), which has the benefit of an all-day
restaurant. Note that the neighbouring Arabian Sea Villas is not run by the same landlord
despite the proximity of the villas.

( 23 295444; www.shanfarihotels.com ; cnr Al-Matar & Ar-Robat Sts; s/d OR30/35; ) Located within
a small commercial complex near the clock-tower roundabout, the hotel is one of the
city's main landmarks. Don't be put off by the rather cavernous, gloomy foyer: the rooms
are old-fashioned but comfortable, the bathrooms and corridors sport marble and Arabian
tiles, and there is a pool. The restaurant, with views of the hills, serves tasty Asian-style
fare among less appealing international dishes.
