In-Depth Information
most characterful hotel in Nizwa. The rooms are more pleasant in the new block, but the
older courtyard and pool have some welcome shade under which is arrayed the evening
buffet - a friendly, tasty affair with long tables for tour groups.
Wi-fi is available (OR1 for one hour) in the business centre. The hotel is 4km from the
khanjar roundabout.
Al-Diyar Hotel$$ HOTEL
( 25 412402; www.aldiyarhotel.com ; s/d OR35/45; ) There is some charm in the gypsum and
marble foyer, complete with gift kiosk, but that charm doesn't extend to the plain, large,
no-nonsense rooms. In a popular town with very few beds, however, this no criticism. The
hotel, which has a large restaurant and wi-fi (OR2 for 24 hours), is 3.5km from the khan-
jar roundabout.
Golden Tulip Nizwa Hotel$$ HOTEL
( 25 431616; www.goldentulip.com ; s/d OR82/94; ) This rather pretentious, marble-clad
hotel has a vast foyer but somehow misses the feeling of Omani hospitality, despite often
hosting members of the royal family. Contrary to first impressions, the internal bar with
the dancing damsels offers an innocent form of entertainment and tourists are welcome.
The hotel is near the Jebel Akhdar junction, 18km from the khanjar roundabout.
Eating
Al-Zuhly Restaurant$ SHWARMA
(meals OR2.500; noon-11pm) This is a simple venue with outdoor seating on the pavement
but it has one of the best night-time views in Oman. Situated opposite the souq, the cafe
overlooks the fort and mosque, both of which are lit up spectacularly at night. It sells
shwarma and kebabs, and is always busy with locals who generally pull up in the car and
toot for a takeaway.
Al-Masharef Turkish Restaurant$ TURKISH
( 95 605335; meals OR3; 11am-midnight) On the Muscat-Nizwa Hwy, next to Tanuf Resid-
ency, this friendly restaurant has indoor seating, welcome in the summer after a dusty
day's drive in the jebel. Kebabs and mezze are the most popular fare.
Bin Ateeq Restaurant$ OMANI
