I spent much of my younger life outside Oman and coming back home, I've noticed the pace of change. But some
things don't change - the friendliness and openness of the Omani people. So my top tips would be to take time to
do things the local way - sit and chat with elders in a village, or share coffee and dates with them. Drink tea with
shop vendors while bargaining for Omani crafts. These are good ways to maximise the positive impact of each
visit. As for minimising negative impact, visitors are politely reminded to respect our culture - particularly when
it comes to covering up in public places.

Tours
As Muscat's attractions are so spread out, a tour is recommended. Generally, tours can be
organised on a bespoke basis by any of the main tour operators.

This new ser-
vice runs air-conditioned, open-top double-decker bus tours through the capital on a hop-
on, hop-off basis, taking in 12 of the major sites from Mutrah and old Muscat to Qurm
and offering a free shuttle to the Grand Mosque. Buses leave from outside Mutrah Souq
and the whole tour takes 1½ hours with an extra 30 minutes for a free walking tour of the
palace area of old Muscat. A guide gives an on-board commentary in English. Tickets can
be bought on the bus or from hotels and a discounted combination ticket for Muscat and
Dubai or Abu Dhabi is available.
