A road runs along the edge of Qurm Nature Reserve towards the Crowne Plaza Hotel, giv-
ing access to a long, sandy beach - a popular place for cruising in the latest on four
wheels and for family picnics on the sand. Women bathing on their own have been accos-
ted here, so avoid skimpy swimwear. There are cafes along the beachfront with a view out
to sea.

1 Shatti al-Qurm & Al-Khuwair
Near the Hotel InterContinental Muscat, along Way 2817, there is a small shopping com-
plex that has become the teeming heart of modern Muscat. This is where you will find
young Omanis cruising the loop in their new VWs, families strolling along the beach amid
five-a-side footballers, and expats enjoying the Western-style cafe culture and shops.
It's worth driving around the ministry and embassy buildings bunched in this area. Make time
to stop at the beachside Grand Hyatt Muscat to enjoy a Yemeni prince's flight of fancy; love it
or hate it, tea in the foyer is a delight.

Opera House Muscat in 2011 was a high point in the capital's cultural life. Built by the
same architects as the Grand Mosque, the understated marble exterior belies the magnifi-
cent interior of inlaid wood and arabesque designs.
Some of the most famous names in opera and ballet performed in a world-class pro-
gram in the opera house's inaugural year and the quality of production has already won in-
ternational acclaim. There's a strict dress code for attending a performance: jeans are not
