Dar Island
Just off the coast south of Sitra, Dar Island offers a great retreat from the city. The main
attraction is the sandy beach, but water sports are also available, and there is a restaurant
and bar at Al-Dar Islands Resort OFFLINE MAP (
17 704 600; www.al-darislands.com ; s/d BD50/80;
7am-5pm; ) . The resort is eco-conscious and protects the island by limiting the num-
ber of visitors per day so it is important to book ahead. Rooms can be rented by the day,
overnight or for 24 hours.
Several excursions operate from the resort, including fishing, dolphin-watching and
dugong-watching. One of the most popular trips is pearl collecting , which involves snor-
kelling to harvest oysters in shallow waters followed by a demonstration of how to find
out if they are pearl-bearing. The trip costs BD30 per person per hour for a minimum of
two people.
Transport to Dar Island leaves from the scruffy harbour in Sitra, on the east side of
Bahrain Island. To get there, take Ave 1, the road that ends at Al-Bander Resort (private
members only) and the Yacht Club, which welcomes tourists. Turn left at the sign for Gulf
Ports and Harbour Services. Sea taxis for Dar Island are available from here, leaving any
time daily between 9am and sunset. The trip costs BD5 return for adults and BD3 for chil-
dren. Remember to bring your passport as photo ID is necessary for boarding the boat.
