Mountain Terraces
Stunning mountain scenery in the Haraz illustrates the husbandry of the land by genera-
tions of terrace-building farmers - although the addictive qat (a mildly narcotic plant) is
beginning to get the better of both local men and their crops.
Original Skyscrapers
The high-rise dwellings of ancient Shibam, a 2500-year-old city in dusty Wadi Hadramawt,
is a precursor if not an inspiration for the modern-day craze for the sky-high tower block.
Traditional Life
The narrow-laned, gossipy, sociable souq is still at the heart of old Sana'a, with its toppling
mud houses resplendent with coloured-glass windows - a theme repeated in ancient towns
throughout Yemen.
