Women in the Workplace
In the workplace, opportunities for senior positions and pay are equal for both sexes (ex-
cept in Saudi Arabia where women are only employed in certain sectors). It is the norm in
most Gulf countries for men and women to work side by side in an office environment. Fe-
male professionals are respected for their qualifications and experience and although it's
often harder for local women to break the glass ceiling, this is not the case for foreign fe-
male professionals who are accorded great respect.
General advice regarding business etiquette is the same for men and women with one ex-
ception: some devoutly religious men will not touch a woman's hand. The key is to take the
cue from the other person when expecting to shake hands.
