The Burnett Basin features a steadily growing population distributed
in several townships. The population includes a significant Indigenous
component, with areas of cultural significance located throughout the basin.
Agricultural production is the main economic activity in the basin with
sugar cane being the most significant agricultural crop and water user in the
region. Horticultural and grazing industries are also significant, with indica-
tions suggesting that growth in the tree cropping sector (for example, citrus
and macadamias) is likely to occur in the future.
Other industries in the basin include some services and industrial activity,
such as mining, Tarong power station and food processing plants based in
