In-Depth Information
February
The Inca Trail is closed all month. Many Peruvian festivals echo the Roman Catholic cal-
endar and are celebrated with great pageantry, especially in indigenous highland villages.
La Virgen de la Candelaria
Held on February 2, this highland fiesta also known as Candlemas is particularly colorful
around Puno, where folk music and dance celebrations last for two weeks.
Carnaval
Carnaval is held on the last few days before Lent (February/March), and is often celeb-
rated with weeks of water fights, singing, dancing, parades and lots of rowdy mayhem.
It's especially popular in highland towns, such as Huaraz.
March
Beach resort prices go down and crowds disperse, though the coast remains sunny. The
Inca Trail is open once again.
Fiesta de la Vendimia
Now is the perfect time to sample local piscos and wines in Ica ( Click here ) . The festival
is held in the second week of March, when you are likely to see fairs, floats, musicians,
and beauty queens stomping grapes.
April
Holy Week is a major event, so book a hotel and transportation well in advance.
