Getting There & Away
Arriving in Peru is typically straightforward, as long as your passport is valid for at least
six months beyond your departure date. When arriving by air, US citizens must show a re-
turn ticket or an onward ticket.
AIR
Peru (mainly Lima) has direct international flights from destinations all over the world.
An international departure tax of US$31 is now usually included in ticket costs. In some
cases, however, you may need to pay this separately in cash.
AIRPORTS
Lima's Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez ( 01-517-3100; www.lap.com.pe ; Callao) is
serviced by direct flights from North, Central and South America, as well as Europe. Check
the airport website or call 01-511-6055 for updated departure and arrival schedules for
domestic and international flights.
Cuzco has the only other airport with international service - to La Paz, Bolivia, four
times a week, on Amaszonas Airlines.
TICKETS
From most places in the world, South America can be a relatively costly destination. The
high season for air travel to and within Peru is late May to early September, as well as
around major holidays. Tickets are often cheaper outside peak periods.
» Note: tickets bought in Peru are subject to a 19% tax.
» It is essential to reconfirm all flights 72 hours in advance, either by phone or online, or
you may get bumped off the flight. If you are traveling in remote areas, have a travel agent
do this for you.
