Women Travelers
While machismo is alive and well in Peru, most female travelers won't contend with more
than the occasional shouts of mi amor (my love). A few tips for enjoying a trip alone or
with the girlfriends:
» If you are fair-skinned with blond hair, be prepared to draw more attention. Peruvian men
consider foreign women to have looser morals and will often make flirtatious comments to
single women.
» Whistling and catcalls are run-of-the-mill. Ignoring all provocation is generally the best
response. If someone is persistent, try an ardor-smothering phrase such as soy casada (I'm
married).
» In tourist towns such as Cuzco, it's not uncommon for fast-talking charmers - known as
bricheros - to attach themselves to gringas. Many are looking for a meal ticket, so ap-
proach professions of undying love with skepticism.
» Outside of big cities, it is rare for a woman to belly up to a bar for a beer, and the ones
that do tend to be prostitutes. If you feel the need for an evening cocktail, opt for a restaur-
ant instead.
» As in any part of the world, use your big-city smarts: be aware of your surroundings, seek
reputable tour operators and taxi companies and, if traveling alone, opt for better hotels in
good neighborhoods.
» In highland towns, dress is conservative and women rarely wear shorts, opting instead for
long skirts, slacks or jeans. Note that shorts, miniskirts and revealing blouses may draw un-
wanted attention.
» Tampons can be difficult to find in remote villages, so stock up in bigger cities and
towns.
