Safe Travel
In a country where one out of every 10 people survives on less than US$1 per day, it is no
surprise that petty crime is quite common and muggings aren't unusual. But a few simple,
big-city precautions can prevent this from happening. The biggest annoyance most travel-
ers will experience is a case of the runs - so don't let paranoia ruin your holiday.
CORRUPTION & SCAMS
» The military and police (sometimes even the tourist police) have a reputation for being
corrupt. While a foreigner may experience petty harassment (usually to procure a bribe),
most police officers are quite courteous to tourists.
» Persistent touts at bus stations, airports and other tourist areas are perhaps the most perni-
cious thing travelers face. Many touts - including taxi drivers - will say just about anything
to steer you to places they represent.
» It is not advisable to book hotels, travel arrangements or transportation through touts.
Many demand cash up-front for services that never materialize.
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
Some of the natural hazards you might encounter in Peru include earthquakes and ava-
lanches. Rescues in remote regions are often done on foot because of the inability of heli-
copters to reach some of the country's more challenging topography.
THEFTS, MUGGINGS & OTHER CRIME
» Street crimes such as pickpocketing, bag-snatching and muggings are all too common.
Other attacks happen with less regularity. Keep your eye on your belongings, don't wear
flashy jewelry and don't put passports and wallets into rear pockets.
» If you are the victim of a crime, file a report with the
policía de turismo
(Poltur). If you
are unsure how to locate them, contact the main office in Lima.
» If you have taken out travel insurance and need to make a claim, Poltur will provide you
with a police report. Stolen passports can be reissued at your embassy. After receiving your
new passport, go to the nearest Peruvian immigration office (see
www.digemin.gob.pe
for
listings) to get a new tourist card.
