The country that has been home to empires both indi-
genous and European has a wealth of cultural and artist-
ic traditions. Perhaps the most outstanding achieve-
ments are in the areas of music, painting, crafts and liter-
ature - the latter of which received plenty of attention in
2010, when Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa won
the Nobel Prize.
