Trekking & Hiking
The variety of trails in Peru is staggering. The main trekking centers are Cuzco and Are-
quipa in the southern Andes, and Huaraz in the north. The country's most famous trek is
the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, but there are plenty of other less-crowded, equally magni-
ficent routes, too.
Near Arequipa, you can trek through two world-famous canyons: the Cañón del Colca
and the Cañón del Cotahuasi. The scenery is guaranteed to knock you off your feet - and,
during the wet season when some routes are impassable, Colca is invitingly lush and
green.
Outside Huaraz, the Cordillera Blanca can't be beat for vistas of snowcapped mountain-
tops. The classic trekking route is the five-day journey from Llanganuco to Santa Cruz.
Shorter trips in the area go to alpine lakes and along old Inca roadways.
Certain areas of Peru, such as the Inca Trail, require guides; in other places, such as the
Cordillera Huayhuash, there have been muggings, so it's best to trek with someone who
knows the area. Outfitters can generally provide equipment, guides, porters and arrieros
(mule drivers). But if you prefer to trek ultralight, bring your own gear, as rental items
tend to be heavy. Whatever adventure you choose, be prepared to spend a few days accli-
matizing to the dizzying altitude before you set out.
Trekking is best during the dry season (May to September) in the Andes.
Mountain, Rock &
Ice Climbing
Peru has the highest tropical mountains in the
world, offering some absolutely inspired
climbs. The Cordillera Blanca, with its dozens
of snowy mountaintops exceeding 5000m, is
one of the top destinations for this in South
America. Ishinca (5530m) and Pisco (5752m)
provide two ascents easy enough for relatively
inexperienced climbers. Nearby, the city of
Huaraz is well stocked with outfitters and
climbing equipment (though it's best to bring
your own gear for serious ascents).
