When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, the Andes
had already seen epic clashes among civilizations. There
had been the deity-obsessed Chavín, the militaristic Wari
and the artistic Moche. But the encounter that remains
most embedded in the Peruvian psyche is the seismic en-
counter between the Incas and Spaniards. It's a tragic
history, yet one that has produced a new culture, a new
race and a fascinating new civilization .
