In-Depth Information
Taxi
While the center of town is compact, you'll likely need to take a mototaxi to get around -
since the docks and other sights are spread around. Mototaxis can take two or three pas-
sengers (and light luggage) to the airport for S7. Short rides around town cost S2 or less.
Around Puerto Maldonado
Río Madre de Dios
This important river flows eastwards past Puerto Maldonado, heading into Bolivia, Brazil
and the Amazon proper. In the wet season it is brown, flows swiftly and looks very im-
pressive, carrying huge logs and other jungle flotsam and jetsam downstream. The main
reason people come here is to stay for a few days in one of several jungle lodges, all of
which are found between 20 minutes and three hours downstream from Puerto Maldonado
itself.
Sights & Activities
Activities consist of hiking, canoeing, fishing, exploring local lakes and tributaries and
wildlife watching. A couple of canopy walkways - Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica
( www.inkaterra.com ) and Yakari Canopy Adventure Offline map
( www.yakaicanopyadventure.com ) - provide a distraction from normal jungle activities. The
latter's is approached by a 200m zipline.
