Kuélap
Although lacking a Unesco listing, the extraordinary stone fortress at Kuélap ( Click here )
is second to Machu Picchu in little else. Standing 3100m above the Río Utcubamba, this re-
markably preserved citadel was built by the enigmatic and strong-willed 'People of the
Clouds.' Some 400 circular dwellings and at least one gravity-defying structure are sur-
rounded by an impregnable rock wall that is a testament to one of the few cultures to suc-
cessfully resist the all-consuming Incas.
