parrots and myriad monkeys that inhabit the Amazon. Likewise, you could also laze
around on the deck of your lodge and wait for the wildlife to come to you!
IQUITOS TO THE JUNGLE Amazon Cruise
The journey starts in (1) Iquitos , the largest city in the world that cannot be reached by
road. Spend the first day taking in this old rubber boomtown, including the tropical archi-
tecture, such as the Casa de Fierro, and the floating shantytown of Belén where, in the
mornings, you'll find a colorful market. Keep your eyes peeled for exotic fruits, such as
the pineapple-shaped aguaje, which is made into creamy ice pops. If you've got an extra
half-day, hop on a peki-peki taxi boat over to the village of (2) Padre Cocha , where you
can pay a visit to the Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm to visit its rescue animals (such as Pedro
Bello, the jaguar).
On the second day, board your river cruise. Day trips are available, but if you really
want to know what the Amazon is all about, book a three-day expedition along the Río
Marañón or the Río Ucayali, which will lead into the waterlogged (3) Reserva Nacional
Pacaya-Samiria . This sprawling park is home to interesting aquatic jungle animals, in-
cluding pink and gray river dolphins, caimans and South American river turtles. The fur-
ther you get away from Iquitos, the more wildlife you are likely to see.
