( 9am-12:30pm & 4-7pm) This church above town is worth a visit. Built between 1535 and
1540, it is said to be the second-oldest church in Peru. There are sweeping views from the
restored belfry.
SURFING & SWIMMING
The curving, gray-sand beach is fine for swimming from December to April; expect seri-
ous teeth-chatter during the rest of the year. The surf is good for beginners and has its reg-
ular followers.
You can rent surfing gear (S15 to S30 per day for a wet suit and surfboard) or take les-
sons from several places, including Muchik ( 63-4503; www.escueladetablamuchik.com ;
Larco 650) and Un Lugar ( 94-957-7170; www.unlugarsurfschoolperu.com ; Atahualpa 225) , two
blocks back from the beach road.

single rooms in Huanchaco, decked out in modern motifs that wouldn't be out of place in

) Though it resides behind high walls and a locked gate, this is a welcoming spot.

between one of town's most lush and pleasant plazoletas and the ocean, this superbly wel-
coming family-run spot has great Mediterranean-tilted rooms that feel like a pleasant sur-
prise. Best of all? The family makes addictive homemade cremoladas (Italian ices; S2).
