COMPLEJO ARQUEOLÓGICO LA HUACA EL BRUJO
This archaeological complex (admission negotiable; h9am-5pm) consists of various sites: Huaca Prieta, the re-
cently excavated Moche site of Huaca Cao Viejo and Huaca el Brujo, which is only starting to be excavated. The
best site for visitors is the Huaca Cao Viejo, a 27m truncated pyramid with some of the best friezes in the area. They
show magnificently multicolored reliefs with stylized life-sized warriors, prisoners, priests and human sacrifices.
The complex is 60km from Trujillo and is hard to find without a guide. It's technically not open to the public, but
tour agencies in Trujillo can arrange a visit.

Hotels can get noisy if you get street-side rooms. Book well in advance in late September,
when places fill up for the International Spring Festival.

The tastefully renovated, rose-colored colonial mansion (now HI-affiliated, though not a
hostel) has a great location just a block from the Plaza de Armas. Helpful staff, a popular
cafe (with room service) and gorgeous courtyards keep travelers coming back.
